This is my first offical blog entry. It was a great day today as we had a great sunday with Erin and all the family. It always amazes me what a great group we are! Saturdays ride was about as good as it gets. The whole family troup together, good job guys, even though the sprint started just abit early. We hope this year is a great year for all. Doug

Eugene Cyclocross Race

Well, it feels like I just competed in my first cyclocross race. The weather here has been pretty rainy and windy. A lot of the city lost power because of the wind last night. When I woke up this morning to ride I wasn't feeling very well, my throat hurt and my nose was running. But I ventured on my bike anyway.

My ride started out normal, rain and darkness. Putting these two together makes it difficult to see objects (specifically fallen tree branches). I was riding along the road when I came around a small bend. Up ahead I thought I saw a puddle, but it turned out to be a big branch. I swerved into the road quickly to avoid it. I quickly turned back into the designated bike section. Between the ashpalt and the cement there was a two inch rise. As I turned my front tire rail slided along the higher section. I lost control and slammed into the curb sending me over the handle bars and landing on my shoulder. Luckily, I was ok and so was my bike. So I picked it up and headed on my way.

I continued and made my way to the bike path. The bike path was covered with tree limbs and debris. I was feeling a little sore, but alright. I even did a dismount to go over a tree limb in the path and hopped back on. I looked down to see what time in was on my computer and noticed it wasn't working. I did a quick glance down to see if my speedometer was not aligned, and again was catapulted from my bike. Again I slammed on my left shoulder, but this time I hit my knee pretty hard. As it turns out a small tree branch came up and got stuck in my fender causing me to endo. I had to break my fender back in to position, but made the last five miles on the journey safely.

Aside from being sore it was pretty fun. I can see how addicting cyclocross could be. Even though it wasn't a sanctioned race I finished my first cyclocross race. See you all soon.

Tanner's the Man

The final cross race of the season brought mixed results for the Cottle crew. Tanner had a great day and I got up close and personal with the ground. Tanner won the junior race against a good junior field. The course was a mixture of mud and frozen ground that resulted in many crashes. Tanner road very well and kept the crashing to a minimum to score a solid win. It was his best race of the year, by far. I was really proud of him and he also won the overall points in the Utah Cyclocross Series for the junior class. There was an awards party afterward and Tanner recieved a medal for his 3rd place at the State Championships as well as an award for winning the overall series. What a great year for the T-man. He has developed into a solid bike handler and is very competitive. He pushes himself to the limit at each race. He's already looking forward to next season.

I had a good start in my race and was leading for most of the 1st lap. I was a close 3rd when I went down hard in some ice on the second lap. I chased back to 4th and was closing a bit on 3rd when I went down again. This pattern repeated itself the entire race. In the end, I crashed 5 times and lost any hope of catching the leaders. I finished 4th about a 1/2 lap down. I was disappointed with my result, but happy to know I can compete with the fast guys in my group when I keep it upright and have good legs. The best crash was missing the re-mount after the barriers right in front of the announcers and crowd. It was impressive and I have the scars to prove it.

I'm off the bike for a week or two now as I take a break before beginning the build for next season. I have 3 months of lots of hours indoors and out ahead of me. However, I had my best year ever on the bike and I'm motivated to get faster.

I forgot the camera Saturday so I don't have pictures. However, utahcyclocross.com should have links to some pictures up in a day or two. Brady, I'll post pictures of skiing this winter just to pressure you to consider moving back!

Pictures

I think I've figured out how to post pictures, finally.

1 More Cross Race to Go

Pretty good time at the cross race yesterday. It was in the 20's, snow on the ground and ice in the corners. In other words, a great day for cross. Tanner had a solid race against a very good junior field. He kept it upright and finished 3rd. With a good finish next week, he should win the overall point series. He has come a long way in a short time and I'm really proud of him. He doesn't have the natural engine like some of the juniors (he's like his Dad in that regard), but he is a grinder and doesn't give up. He's having a lot of fun and gaining valuable experience and fitness.

My race was very good for 45 minutes. For the first time in my cross racing career, I was with the big boys. The course was great for me because bike handling really mattered. It wasn't like Wheeler Farm where the guys who can go fast in a straight line dominate. I was 2nd out of the 1st corner and rode with another guy for a number of laps. I moved into 2nd and stayed there for 30 minutes. I could see the leader and I began to close on him. He had about 30 seconds and I cut it down to less than 5 seconds with 4 laps to go. I had closed the gap to 10 yards and was confident I'd pass him. I was thinking "wow, I'm going to win this thing". With the snow and ice, we were on the edge of crashing all day. Well, coming into a corner near the start / finish area I went down without warning. I wasn't hurt and was up quickly. However, my carbon handle bar broke right behind the front brake/shifter. I couldn't believe it. While I was figuring out what to do, 2 guys passed me. I got back on and tired to ride it. I decided to give it a go and raced the last three laps (15 minutes) with half a bar, no front brakes and stuck in the big ring. Even though I couldn't go fast in the technical sections, I manged to close on the 3rd place guy and almost got him. I was really bummed because everything was falling in line for a big win for me.

Even though I didn't get the win, this was a breakthough race for me. I now know I can race with the fastest guys in the masters group, particularly in technical conditions. I can't wait for the final race next Saturday. I'm praying for snow this week!

Rainy days continue

Daren and Tanner I am glad to hear that your racing is going well. That is great that you get to ride with Tanner, maybe Liam will start riding in a few years. Our family will be visiting Dec. 24 to January 1, so hopefully we will get to see the crew and maybe do a ride or go skiing. I think Doug wants to go skiing on Dec. 26 or 27. Let us know if anyone is available and wants to go.

A funny thing happened here in Eugene - it snowed. So I pulled out my mountain bike and rode that to work. It was kind of fun, slow but fun.

I had to ride my trainer for the first time in about a year. Liam thought that it was pretty cool! He wanted to get drinks and put his drink in the holder. I am trying to put in as much time as I can riding. I got to go on the group ride on Saturday. Someone forgot to tell them to go easy in the winter. It was a hard ride. But things are going well here.

Another Cross Update

Here's another quick cyclocross update (Go to utahcyclocross.com for results and links to pictures). Tanner is the man. He has raced 5 races now and has two wins a couple of 2nds and a 3rd. He was 3rd in the State championships two weeks ago with a flat and a wheel change. We would have been contending for the win without the flat. Yesterday, he had a solid win and is getting better each week. We set up some barriers on the grass next to our garage and he has been practicing a day or two a week in the dark. Pretty impressive. I was able to put together a road bike for the T man and he did his first group road rides this week. He road with the Porcupine Team for 2 hours on Thanksgiving and then with the family group for 3 on Friday. He did well and made through 85 miles in two days and then won the cross race on Saturday! It is great to have him riding but a little stressful for Dad as I worry about him crashing or getting hit by a car. Tanner also got a ski day in last week, so he's a happy 14 year old.

My racing has been up and down. I had two good races at Rocky Mountain Raceway and was really excited about the state championships. However, I caught a low-level cold a few days before the race and it did me in. Doug, JoAnn, Erin and other friends were there to watch my explosion and suffering. I was with the two leaders the 1st 9 minute lap then I blew up in a bad way. I then suffered for 45 minutes and watched guys ride away from me all race. I'm not sure I've suffered like that in a race before. I limped home in 9th place. I was sure my season was over. However, after a week of doing very little, I started to feel better this week. I wasn't at my best yesterday, but road a smart race and managed to finish 4th. That is my best cross result to date and I'm now excited to race the last 2 races.

Doug was going to give the racing a go, but crashed on the cross bike and fractured his hand. Hopefully, it will be good enough to let him race the final race in 2 weeks.

I now have an official coach. My teammate Dave Harward (the #1 ranked amateur in Utah) has started a coaching business and I'm now a client. I decided rather than spending some money on a new bike this year, I'd spend some on engine. We are both excited and curious to see how is goes. My focus for next week will be MTB races, Crits and Cyclocross. These three go together well and will allow me to use my limited training time more effectively. It also means no LoToJa again for me. I'll be taking a late summer break and then working specifically on cyclocross in August and September. I think cross could be my most competitive race discipline. I'd really like to do a Nation level race next year in the 45+ masters.

Hope all is well for the Holidays!

Rainy days in Eugene

It has been a while since I was able to post an update, but with my new YM calling my time has been a little more spent. My season is over so there isn't much going on. The rain is starting here and I have REALLY enjoyed riding in the rain.

I don't think I am going to get to race cyclocross this year, but maybe next year. Daren it is good to hear yours is going well. I am glad to hear everyone is still riding and doing well.

Cross-Eyed

It's time for a Cottle cyclocross update. We're 3 races into the Utah Cyclocross series and there is already a win in the family. Tanner watched my first race and decided he should give it a go. He raced in the Ogden mud-fest two weeks ago and at RMR yesterday. After a strong 2nd at Ogden, Tanner won the junior division at RMR. It was fun to watch and he rode hard.

Tanner raced the his first cross race on his MTB bike. However, we finished putting my old cross bike together a couple of days before RMR. T got a little practice time at the school and in our backyard and gave the new rig a go. He's not completely comfy on it yet, but it was faster than his MTB. The RMR course was hard and surprisingly technical with one barrier secttion, a fast staircase and a grass run-up. His group (the C's, Women's and JR's) went 45 minutes. If you've never done cross, 45 minutes in pretty long. I call cross racing a trip to the pain cave. Tanner call's it a trip to the pain abysis. However, he' pleased to have won and excited to do it again. Next week's race is at RMR again. He goes off at 10 am.

I've had mixed results so far. There is a new 35+ masters class that races with the A's (the pro's, cat 1/2). It has been fun mixing it up with the big boys. The first race was at the Olypmic Park in Park City and included a pretty big climb. I felt really bad at the start and didn't get better. The only good news was that it was on a Friday night and we could only race 30 minutes due to darkness. I manged to not finish last.

The next stop was at Fort Buenaventura in Ogden. It rain all week and most of the race. The course is about 90% dirt or grass and was very muddy. However, the course is the best we race on and the mud was actually kind of fun (other than the 3 hours of bike cleaning after the race). I had a much better race and finished 5th in the 35+ and 19th overall. I was less intimidated by the fast A's but still got a very poor start. In cross racing, the start is very important. There is usually some obsticle in the first minute or so that make the riders go single-file. If you're at the back, you lose big time to the leaders. Did I mention cross racing is hard? My AT is 160 peats per minute. I averaged 159 for an hour and 5 minutes. I was pretty much at my limit the entire race.

As I mentioned above, yesterday's race was at RMR. I didn't think the course would be too great, but it was fun. It was about 60% pavement, but pretty technical. I actually did well on the pavement. I was agressive on the start and was in 2nd in my class into the first corner (in the top 15 overall). I was on my teammate Steve's wheel (Steve has won all 3 35+ races this year) and hanging. Our teammate Aaron Jordin came by and we got on his wheel and he pulled through the first long pavement section. The three of us stayed together the 1st lap and were just off the overall leaders. The next time up the grass section, I could feel my rear tire rolling. I looked back and it was going flat. I had to back off on the grass or crash. I managed to get around to the pits and changed my wheel. By this time, I was about in dead last and only 10 minutes into the race. However, I got going again and rode hard the rest of the race. I slowly pulled some guys back and had 3rd&4th place in my class about a 100 yards ahead. However, I ran out of time and couldn't get to them before the finish. I ended up 5th again, but with losing a couple of minutes due to the flat, I was pretty happy. I should have / could have been 2nd or 3rd.

Did I mention cross is hard? My average HR was again 159 and I was cross-eyed for about 30 minutes after the race. I was cramping the last 15 minutes and could hardly walk last night. Not sure why we do this, but I can't wait for next week.

Not so Good Day at the Races

I did the first cyclocross race of the season. It was not a good showing for big D. I was out of town all week on business and was feeling my lack of sleep and over-eating. In addition, I've got a little bit of a cold.

The cross course at the Olympic Sports Park is brutal when you have a bad day. It is very moutain bike like and I might race my MTB there the next time. It has a steep, long climb each lap as you drop down below the ski jump.

In an effort to search for the positives in life, here's what I've come up with for last night's race. Due to darkness, the race was only 30 minutes. I got lapped just before the leaders started their last lap thus eliminating one lap for me. I wasn't dead last. Chris Pietrzak on my team won impressively. I was able to chear Chris on as he passed me. I did well on the barriers. There are more races.

Tanner and I are planning on racing in Ogden next Saturday. AT, you should do it. We could probably get my old cross bike together. You should do the next race at the Olympic Sport Park on your MTB.

Good Day at the Races

Yesterday was the Harvest Moon Crit in Ogden. It was a great atmosphere for a bike race. A big street festival with a race in the middle of it. It probably had the most people I've ever raced in front of. The family was well respresented. Adam and Doug in the Cat 4/5's (Doug was guilted into the 4/5's after passing on the master's race) and me in the Cat 3's.

Adam and Doug did really well. It was pretty fast and Doug made it through about half the race. A guy in front of him let a gap open and that was it. In a short, 4 corner crit, it is difficult to catch back on when gaps go. AT looked comfy in the front thrid of the pack the whole race. I was warming up and riding back and forth in a parking lot to see him twice a lap. I was more nervous for AT than for me. He moved up at the right time and battled it out on the last lap. AT ended up 3rd in the 5's and 4th overall. At little better placing on the last lap and he would have won. On this course, you had to 1st or 2nd out of the last corner. For a first crit, he did awsome. He's now amped up to race next season and will be racing with me in no time.

The Cat 3 race was fun. Glen and Eric on my team raced and the plan was to try to launch them for a 1,2 finish. Eric has been very strong this year (he's the overall Utah Cat 3 champ) and Glen is well, Glen. If a break wasn't going to stick, which became clear early, the plan was for me to lead out Glen and Eric in the last couple of laps. Only problem with the plan is that I've never been on the front of a Cat 3 race with a few laps to go.

I was just hanging on the first 15 - 20 mins and wondering if I would survive. My heart rate was above AT the whole time and we were sprinting out of every corner. Fortunately, it calmed down, I improved and found a much better line around the course. Glen and I hung out in the back 1/3 of the pack for 15 minutes then started to move up. When we got the 8 laps to go call, I moved up just ahead of Glen and Eric and got to 3rd then 2nd wheel. I closed gaps and tried to stay right there. With about 4 to go, a bunch of guys attached and Glen and Eric got a head of me. I thought I was done, but hung in around 10th place. On the second to last lap, I was moving up a little and decided to go for it. With half a lap to go I jumped and got Glen and Eric on my wheel out of the last corner (I had the full 2 wheel slide going). I went to the front and drilled it as hard as I could through the first corner. Glen and Eric launched off my pull with 2/3 a lap to go and easily finished 1,2. I avoided the 2 crashes on the lap and rolled in a very pleased 14th. I was pumped to have actually helped in a high level race. It has been a long time coming and is a huge confidence builder for next year.

There is one more crit next Saturday, but I think we're going to break out the MTB's instead. The first cross race is Friday night and I don't think I'll do the double. I'm going to be out of town most of the week and that might be a bit much. I'm really excited about the cross race. I didn't race at all last year and I missed it. In cross, you send the whole race in the pain cave, but it is somehow fun.

Later,

Daren

Last Crit

Well, it was the last crit of the year. I attacked to try and get a breakaway started and push the pace. The first attack me and another guy broke away, but he died out and I ended up pulling for 5 laps before they finally caught us. The second attack I got four riders. Only one of them would pull. One guy even told me he wouldn't pull, he said he was "riding for his team." It was frustrating, I guess that is why people join teams. With 2km to go I decided for one last try to attack, but got caught with 1/2 a km to go and ended up taking 6th. Avery got to ride in her first road race. She had fun, but got tired riding the 2 km's.

I wanted to ride the Eugene Celebration this year because it was before Lotoja. It is a four stage, three day stage race. I wanted to ride the Sat. road race, but it was $80 for all three days and they wouldn't let me ride only one day. So I was a little disappointed, but it keeps me fresh for Lotoja. It was a good year, and I learned a lot more about racing. I know I need to be more patient before I attack.

4 days to Lotoja! Hope were all ready.

Talk to you all later,
Bubba

Eugene Crit Update

Well, I am finally updating from last Tues. I have been trying to ride as much as possible over last two weeks. I have been riding twice a week with a local group, who kick my rear end. So when last weeks crit came along I was pretty beat. A group of four riders took off early and got a good lead. No one wanted to pull them back in, and their teams sat at the front and kept the pace slow. I wasted a lot of energy pulling them back. My friend Jeremy was racing in his second crit and he felt pretty good. Into the last corner he was in the lead. He stood up to pedal in the last corner to early and his back tire went out from him, and he hit his pedal on the ground in his down stroke. Needless to say the fall was pretty. He hit pretty hard. I didn't see him do it but had to swerve to miss him and got stuck behind someone whose chain came off. I finished the race 7th. Jeremy is sore but alright. He hurt his hip and neck. He does have some nice cuts and bruises to go with it.

We have the last crit of the summer on Tues. and a road race on Sat. I will let you know how they go.

Let's Go South

If anyone is reading this still, I'll catch up a little. The road and MTB season is offically over for me. I struggled to a 3rd place finish at the Unitas I-Cup. It was a very difficult day and I was a little disappointed. However, it was enough to win the overall points title in the 40+ experts. I'm pretty happy with the year and surprised to win the overall. There were some injuries to other riders, but I still had my best year. I went faster than ever and actually won 2 races. I'm motivated to continue the improvement next year. I re-discovered that mountain bike riding and racing is why I started riding in the 1st place. It rocks.

Tanner had a super race. He was a solid 2nd and made huge progress this year. It has been a blast riding and racing with him. He is still very uncomfortable riding on the road, but hopefully, I get him out with us next year.

I took more than a week off the bike and it was OK. It felt good to rest a bit, but by the end I felt lazy, fat, slow and ready to get off the couch. I've been back on this week and actually felt fast on the lunch ride hill climb today. The plan is now to ride, do some cross training and get ready for cyclocross. I'm really looking forward to cross. Hopefully, I'll be able to hang with the top guys in my class. I'll be building some barriers with weekend to begin my practice. You all should consider doing a cross race. It is a gas. I'll probably race a few of the weekday crits to work on top end speed.

The bow hunt is on. Tanner and I have been up a couple of times. No shots yet, but have chased a couple small bucks. For me the big deal is the Elk hunt. It opens tomorrow and I'll be hunting hard the week of 9/11. With any luck, I'll have a big rack in the garage and lots of meat to share.

Doug and I have been talking about a fall trip to Moab (now that he is a mountain biker). I'm thinking UEA weekend, 10/20 and 10/21. The plan would be to leave Friday AM, ride Friday PM and Saturday AM, come home Saturday PM. Anybody in? Let me know. We need to decide asap.

Brady, good job on the racing. It sounds like you are flying. I wish you were here so we could race together. I could be your leadout man in the cat. 3's. Send me an e-mail at dgc@eastontp.com. I can give you wheel options for LoToJa on my bike.

Later.

Oregon Update

It has been a while since I have updated. Thanks for the rides in Utah. The 100 mile (excuse me 92.2 mile) ride was a lot of fun. Here are the winners:

White Jersey (Oldest rider and being able to hang with 30 year olds): Doug
Green Jersey (for chasing the Ogden 1 rider down the hill/flats): Sutt
Polka Dot Jersey (or otherwise known as the stupidity award): Bubba
Most Improved Rider (and a welcomed guest to the Lotoja team): Robbie

It was good to be back racing this Tuesday. I tried to make a break with another guy with 9 km laps to go. I pulled out hard and sprinted a lap and turned to the guy to take a turn and pull, but he said he couldn't. I held the breakaway for about 4 laps, then knew I couldn't hold it for 5 more laps by myself. It took a lot of my energy, and ended finishing 3rd. On the plus side, I was the overall points winner for the July crits! I guess it pays to be consistant.

GC Connection

How far are we going on sat? what time and where? Let me know.

A Double Win

A good day on the MTB for the Cottle's yesterday. Tanner won the 13 - 15 Beginner class and I won the 40+ expert. With last week's relay win, that brings our house-hold win total to 4 over the last two weeks. No wins for years, now four. Go figure.

We raced 32 miles west of Wendover. It was at pretty high elevation, but still very hot. The course had a ton of climbing and was very hard. T and I both had good days and won by wide margins. I dug very deep and was a sad looking puppy at the end. It took a good hour to be able to stand without getting dizzy. For a while I thought Tanner would have to drive home. My AT heart rate is about 160 and I averaged 159 for 2 hours and 35 minutes. I guess you could say I went hard the whole time.

With one race to go in the intermountain cup series, I'm now in 1st place on points. I guess I really need to do the last race on the 12th because it is double points. If I finish no worse than one place behind the guy in 2nd, I should win the overall. Hopefully, I can get another win. I think it is a good course for me - long, fast, hard and no long climbs.

Tanner has realized huge improvement this year. Early in the year, he could hardly ride a course like Saturday's, let alone race it. He road hard for an hour and 20 minutes and felt good. It's cool to see him become a mountain biker and that we can ride together and have fun. (He said I had to mention that he won by 20 minutes just because it's cool.)

Looks like I'll miss Brady entirely. Kind of a bummer, I was hoping to get at least one ride in with him. I guess I'll just watch him from the car at LoToJa.

DC

Well, I'm back and the results are very different after the last crazy couple of days. Robbie is firmly in the GC lead, over an hour ahead of 2nd, and it is a close battle for second. Tom B. left the tour and killed me and Bub. The climbers battle is pretty much done at this point.

I'll work out the formula for the overall winner this weekend.

Being Consistent

What I should do is copy and past the last two races. Yet again I took second. There were about 40+ people yesterday and the pace was pretty quick. I was in a good position on the last lap, but didn't have enough room to pass the last guy, so I lost by about a foot.

Sutt, Louie, or Robbie let me know if you want to go ride on that Wed., Thurs., or Friday when I am in town. It would be fun to do a ride together before Sat.

Visit

It looks like our visit will be July 25 - 31. Doug told me that there is going to be a family ride on Sat., 100 miles. Sounds great! I am excited to get to ride with everyone. Daren, sorry you won't be there. Doug and I may come down on Thurs or Fri and ride the lunch ride. Good job Robbie and Daren on your races. Can't wait to ride with you all again.

Go Floyd!

A Winning Day

Looks like today was a winning day for the family. Robbie won his class at the Echo Tri and I won my class at the Snowbird MTB race. This is my 1st win of an expert XC and of any race for a long time. There were only 3 in my class today, but hey, a win's a win. The Snowbird course if very hard. There is only about 5 mins of descending per lap. All the climbing is very steep, so the last lap was very difficult for me. I'm trashed tonight. Brady, your win is coming. It's time for a break-through.

No real chanbe in the fantasy tour, although kind of a strange day. Probably a good move for Landis to give up the jersey for a few days. I'm out of town Mon - Wed, so I'm not sure I'll have internet access. If I don't I'll update the standings when I'm back.

Stage 12

Well Doug and Brady used their 2nd reserve with Salvo now out. Their replacements helped both of them. Popo's win helped close the gap to Robbie for a few of us.

I'm racing at Snowbird tomorrow. It is a very difficult course. If I feel good, I should do well. However, with bad legs, it could get ugly fast. We'll see.

Good luck Robbie at your Tri-geek race.

The Real Race is ON!

George Hincapie has become a climber. Chris Horner will be with Evans in the mountains. After the TT, Levi is done. Oscar Pereiro will fight for the climbers jersey. Discovery has 4 guys that can win the tour. Iban Mayo will contend this year. Daren can climb with Chris Bingham on the lunch ride. These are a few of the myths that were destroyed today.

Robbie had the vision to not pick George and he is firmly in the lead. It will take a big come back from George to boot Robbie out.

Here's where we stand:

Yet Again!

It seems I keep coming up short. Yet again I finished 2nd. The person running the crit made a mistake. At three laps to go a guy took off being a rabbit for his teammate. He got a good lead on the lap. As we crossed lap three I noticed the sign said one lap left and this guy had a pretty big lead. Myself and another guy tried to catch him. I got close. I lost by about three feet. It seems I am destined for 2nd place. Maybee next time.

Daren thanks for adding the scores for the Tour. Hope you did well on your races. We might be coming up soon, I will keep you posted. Go Floyd!

Stage 7

Big changes today. We are starting to get some separation. Everyone has Levi on their team, so we suffered equally. Adam lost Julich but his replacement is Cadel Evans, so he actually improved (but not enough to escape last place). Russ is in the lead and will probably stay there until the mountains and Dave Z. gets dropped. Kim made a recovery with Lang's strong TT. Lang maybe the surprise of the Tour if he climbs well.

Looks like the only real question on the points jersey is if Boonen makes it to Paris. If we does, Brady and I have it wrapped up with McEwen and Boonen on our teams.

Stage 4

See the latest below. The green jersey is starting to take shape. Big Thor getting relegated to last and losing any points today because of "irregular" sprinting cost some of you big time. Stu O'Grady getting hurt was damaging as well. Poor Tanner has both of these guys.

With riders dropoing left and right, I think we should pick a second reserve for the GC. Accordingly, respond to this posting with your second pick. The second reserve will only be used if you have 2 GC guys go out. You need to get your pick in before the time trial. No change today in our GC standings and still no KOM points for anyone.

Monday Crit

They changed the normal Tues. night crit to Mon. this week because of the 4th. The group was a little smaller, around 25 people. I went out pretty quick and realized quickly that I was working to hard, so I tried to recover for a few minutes. Mid way through the race they were giving half points for the sprint winner. I came in second on that, only losing by half a foot.

With one km to go a quy broke off with a guy right behind him. I caught up to them and the three of us got a 15-20 yard gap. In the end it came to a sprint off. I think I took second by a few inches. Falling short yet again. I won't know for sure until the post the official results. It was fun to be out there riding.

Daren, I haven't figured out how you can add pictures, but if you want to email them to me and what you want them to say I can post it for you.

Stage 3

Some significant events today. Daren and Doug lost Valverde and had to go to their reserves. For those that have McEwen, the loss of his lead out man, Fast Freddy, will hurt McEwen's chances to win stages. Still no KOM points for anyone. We probably won't have any points for some time.

Kim went from 1st to last on GC today, Lang had a difficult day. Daren and Brady now lead the Green Jersey comp (as it should be). Shouldn't be much change tomorrow on GC unless more crashes take out people. The sprinters should have a good day tomorrow. The time trial is looming and will cause the first big shake up.

Let's Play Fantasy Tour

Hey guys,

Let's do a fantasy Tour de France. Here's how it might work. There are 3 classifications. You would pick 5 riders for GC (Yellow), 2 for sprint (Green) and 2 for climbers (Polkadots). For GC, we would use the total time of the 5, for srints and climbers, we would use the total points. At the end, we would assign points for our relative placing in each of the three classifications. If your rider doesn't complete the race, they would get the time of the slowest rider for GC and no points for sprints or climbers. If we wanted, we could also have a reserve list to substitute if a rider gets injured of drops out. I would be the score keeper and would post updates every few days.

Let me know what you think. Since Sutt is out of town until Saturday, we could have a Sunday night deadline for team submission (you get the first two stages free). You have to come up with a team name as well. I think it would be fun.

I survived the White Rim Trail with my Teachers and Priests. It turned out to be a very good experience. We made in 3 days rather than the 4 we had planned. It was very hot and a real challenge for them. It was stressful for me, but pretty good overall. Tanner rode really well and had a great time.

I just about won a race at Sherwood Hills a week and a half ago. I battled with another guy the whole race. I lead the first lap and then he pulled away for two. On the last lap, I caught him at the base of the last climb and thought I had it. However, he put the hammer down and I blew. However, it was my second, 2nd place this year on the MTB. Doug and Robbie road up and it was great to have them there. Tanner raced and continues to improve.

I raced the RMR Crit last night in 100 degree heat. It was very fast and hard for me. My throat still hurts from being so hot and dry. I actually had a good race. I worked really hard in the last few laps to close down some gaps for my teammate Eric then hung on to the group for the sprint. Eric got boxed in a bit but still finished 5th.

Good job on the race, Bub. That's really cool to make the break.

Bub, how do you post pictures? Let me know and I'll put some up from our White Rim Trail trip.

Died trying

Well the old saying "Die trying" held true for the crit race last night. The crit race was 35 km this time and the temperature was 95 degrees (that's hot here). We started with around 35 riders, but five laps in there was a breakaway of 11 riders. The rest of the group dissolved and many riders quit. I pulled quite a bit to keep the pace up. With 3 laps to go I decided to try and pull away, because I can't sprint! With 3/4 of a lap left I got caught and I didn't have much left, but I finished 6th. Don't forget your tour predictions.

Crits and Dirt

I took a break from the MTB and raced the Sugarhouse Crit last saturday. It is a really cool loop through the park with about 3 1/2 minute laps. Each lap has two brief climbs (stand and sprint for 15 seconds). I raced in the Cat. 3's with hopes of helping my teammate Eric R. win. I lent a hand a few times closing gaps (then blowing up and hanging on for a few laps) and got him to the front with two laps to go (he really doesn't need any help from me). I tried to stay at the front, but don't have the top end speed necessary to keep from drifting pack when it gets crasy fast. As a result, I took my customary place near the back of the bunch as the sprint wound up. Eric was in great position for the sprint but ended up 4th. I had a good time. We had a few slow laps but still managed to average 26.5 for 21 miles.

Tanner and I are racing at Sherwood Hills tomorrow. I really like the course, so it should be fun. I don't race until 1:30. Doug is thinking about riding up to see the race. Tanner has been riding a fair amount and is getting good. Our Teachers and Priests are going to ride the White Rim Trail in Moab next week over 4 days (Adam, by the way, I need your MTB. I keep calling and don't ever get an answer. Call me, I'd like to get it tomorrow). Tanner is the strongest rider of the boys, by far. He's at the point that we actually have fun riding together on the dirt.

Check out Eric Rasmussen's blog http://teamrico.blogspot.com/
He talks about the lunch ride. Go to the archives and read about the cast of characters. See if you can figure out who is who. It's pretty funny.

Eugene Crit

Well, I finally got a chance to race in my first crit of the year. It was a cold, cloudy, and windy day, but it was fun to be out there. The group stayed together for most of the race, without anyone breaking away. The course is a 1 km loop and the cat 4/5’s do 25 laps. I tried to stay up in the front without having to work to hard pulling. Overall I finished 9th out of 30+ people. I finished with the time of just over 39 minutes. My average speed was 25.5 mph and I had an average heart rate of 164. Maybe someday I will get some power and pull away on the sprint – I doubt it! But it’s still fun to go out and ride.

Stem?

I need to get a smaller stem for my bike. I have a 130 mm stem and my back has been hurting because I am stretching to much. Does anyone have a smaller stem (110-120) that they would be willing to sell? Let me know.

Racing in the trees

Hey guys,

I haven't written for a while, but the racing continues. Tanner and I raced at Sundance yesterday and it was spectacular. The race course is nearly all classic Utah single track with great views of Timp. 23 miles, 3200 vertical and dead legs made it a challenge. However, I hung in there and road a solid last lap to finish 5th in a tough field of 40 + experts. I was very spent and had to spin the last climbs to keep from cramping. I've finally ridden my MTB enough to feel comfortable letting it fly on the downhill again. Railing corners at speed on a MTB is more fun than you should be allowed to have. The only bad thing about the course is that it is very difficult to pass because of all the single track. For some reason, they started the women pros in front of our group. We caught them about 5 minutes in and had a hard time getting around them. It caused some gaps that shouldn't have happened. In the end, it probably didn't change the outcome.

Tanner did well and made it around the course in an hour (he did 1 lap, the experts did 3). He was 5th out of 6 in the 13 - 15 beginner. There are a couple of young guys in his group that motor. Tanner beat 2 of the 3 16 - 18 year old beginners and many of the adult beginners. He's having fun and getting better each race.

Last week's MTB race at Thanksgiving Point was not much fun. It was 10 miles of winding single track in flat open fields. It was cold and very windy. It was more like a road TT than a MTB race. It was really strange racing around in a field by the freeway. Probably don't have to do this race again in the future.

The night before, I raced a road race at the new Larry Miller Motorsports Park. It was a blast riding on the new 4.5 mile loop built for motorcycles and cars. The race was fast and fun and I ended up 14th in the 40 + group. It came down to a group sprint and I wasn't aggressive enough in the last corner.

Thanks for the picture of your house Bub. Looks good. One of these days, I'll put up some race pictures.

Not sure if I'll race this week, we'll see how the legs feel. I've raced a bunch the last 2 months and need a break soon. The White Rim Trail with my Teachers and Priests is coming in 3 weeks. Adam, I might need to borrow your MTB. Also, I put a really cool small MTB back together with some new wheels. It is a 13" S-works hardtail that Tanner used to ride. After the White Rim Trail, I'm going to sell it to pay for the wheels. Let me know if anyone is interested. It is a very cool kid's or women's MTB for very little money.

Rain, Rain, Go Away!

Not as much riding here with the rain. We had about three weeks in a row without rain. But it has come back. We had a friend from college move close by last week. He was a distance runner in college and continues to run. I took him on a ride sat. and he liked it. Maybe I will have someone close to ride with? I still haven't had time to race, but hopefully in June it will be better. I am including a photo of our house, since I can't take you on a ride to our house.

Maybe if it stops raining I will take some pictures of some of the ride views - it is pretty amazing.

TT and Near Crash

Hey guys, how are you all doing. Last week or so has been busy but good. Doug and I got in a nice ride Saturday, 50 miles and 2,500 vert. For a tired old guy, Doug climbed extremely well. In the afternoon, I took 6 of my teachers on a mountain bike ride. Not nearly as fun as the ride with Doug, but I survived.

Last Thursday, I did my second TT. Things went much better this time. I took 40 seconds off my first try and felt much stronger. I did the 7 miles in 15:57, or an average speed of 26.2 mph. I think with more experience I can get another 15 - 30 seconds off. I think I'm going to like the TT. It is extremely difficult, but fun in a strange way. During Thursday's TT, I reached my highest HR of the year, 171, and had an average of 166 for the 16 minutes. The trick is to go right to the edge of blowing up, without going over.

Last night I did RMR. They have some orange construction cones (3 inches diameter about 3 feet tall) down the drag strip marking the timing devices. Some guy about 6 or 7 riders up from me hit one of these cones and it flew into the group going about 28 mph. It took 3 guys down right in front of me (including Greg Frebrian on my team). I had both wheels fully locked up and somehow managed to miss the pile up. No one was badly hurt. By the time we got it sorted out, the group was 1/2 a lap ahead. I road for awhile until they caught me and sat on the back the rest of the race. Eric on my team easily won the sprint. The crash was in the same place I went down 3 years ago. It freaked me out more than a little. RMR has big groups, over 50 B's again, and high speeds. Not a great combination at times.

Tanner and I are both racing on the dirt Saturday. Should be another hard one. It's at Soldier Hollow, the olympic XC ski venue. It is not technical, but constantly up and down. 2 and 1/2 hours of 3.4 minute intervals. Can't wait.

Later,

Once again Sutt and I have successfully had a winning baseball season with nothing to show for it. Being the fact that we cannot win a big game. I believe that I am good to go for Saturday, if something comes up I will let you know.

5 Mile Pass MTB

Hey guys. I made it through another mountain bike race. Kind of a strange race with a good result. But first, the really cool news is that Tanner completed his first real race. He raced in the 13 - 15 beginner class and finished 5th out of 6 racers. All of the other kids had raced many times and Tanner did OK. He finished the difficult 11 mile lap in 1 hour 18 minutes. His time was better than a number of the adult beginners. He struggled on the climbs, but did well on the down (sounds like his Dad). All in all, he was pleased with his effort and excited to ride his bike more.

I ended up 2nd in the 40+ expert class. This matches my best finish. However, I really had to work hard and had a slower time than last year. I just didn't have good legs and could not punch it on the climbs. I had to back off and spin up everything. We had a small group and I dropped to last after the 1st climb. However, it is a long race and I thought if I road steady, I could probably get a few places back. Turns out I went from last to 2nd over the last half of the race. It is a real power course that doesn't let up. I was definately ready to be done after 2 and 1/2 hours.

Chris Bingham on our team easily won my class. He is impressive. He got a flat and still beat me by 6 minutes. Without the flat, he would have had a top 5 time overall, including pros. He raced with Glen back in the day on the Schwinn / Wheaties team and finished 26th in the first MTB world championships won by Ned Overand. Chris is just getting back into racing after about 6 or 7 years off. He and Glen can put the hurt on the rest of us old guys.

Our team had a good day Saturday. Chris and I were 1, 2 on the dirt. At the Antelope Island road race, we had a 3,4 finish in the Cat 1/2, a 4th in the Cat 3's, Glen won the 35+ Masters, and Cherell Jordin (Aaron's wife) won the women's Cat 4.

Tanner finished up his hunter's safety class tonight (I took it with him) at the shooting range. He's now offical. We're planning on doing some bowhunting together. There were a bunch of SLC Cops out at the range and we thought of Russ. Lots of noise on that end of the range.

I'm not racing Saturday. Doug and I talked about riding early. I need to be home by noon or so. You guys in?
